Treasurer
Gaffneyis Regiment, through the kindness of member Don Chesney, has its own historic site in Fredenburg, near Duluth.
Dun Gowan is an ongoing project wherein we are building a 17th century village. We have built a small garrison fort there, and have been working on the first house for several years now.
Dun Gowan is the site of our annual Tactical, and when we have more buildings up we can host immersion weekends, where the public - or other reenactors, living historians, and the like - could come live in the 17th century with us for a weekend. If we do it right, it could be a wonderful addition to our annual events, focusing as it would on living history.
We need help building! If we get enough workers up there this season, we should be able to erect the frame of the first house before the snow flies. We are nearly done with hewing the timbers, after which we will cut the joints, assemble the components, and then have a house-raising party!
No experience is neccessary - just bring a willingness to learn.
The weekends scheduled for this year are:
June 19 & 20
July 10 & 11
Aug (to be determined)
Sept 11 & 12
Oct 16 & 17
The more the merrier, and the sooner we have a house up there.
If you can attend attend any of these weekends, or if you have any questions, please contact Captain David at baethan1630@yahoo or 612-378-1973.
Thanks!
p.s. Another group that has built their own site is Skjaldborg, the Viking group from Omaha that we have often played with at the various Iowa events we have done. Their website is www.skjaldborgedu-tainment.com/ and their site, Vikinghjem, can be viewed at vikinghjem.skjaldborgedu-tainment.com/
Bruce
I look forward to working with you!

Margaret Kirkpatrick has the books and articles on Scottish history and folklore, military and food. Cindy Schaufenbeul will be housing the music books; Ellis O'Rourke now hosts the textiles & crafts books, along with the Fiber Guild meetings; and clothing and dance will be with Julie Yoder.
Please contact any of the above directly to borrow materials from our library. Sarah Shaftman has produced a catalogue in Excel 2007. It's complete as to the books & pamphlets, articles & photocopies, and videotapes we have in hand. She can provide it in an alternate format as needed.
We are putting together such a list of in-house talent. If you wish take advantage of this free advertising, please let David know that you want to be on the list, along with what you make or can help others make.
Thanks.

A lot of valuable information is in the current Clann Tartan Manual.

Board Minutes
Minutes of the Clann Tartan Board of Directors; April 20, 2010
Present were, of the Board, Karen Bastien, Bruce Yoder, David Vavreck, Laura Swenson, and Julie Yoder; others present were Brittany Johnson, Mia McDavid, and Margaret Kirkpatrick.
The Secretary was not present and is moving out of town. Mia McDavid took the minutes for this meeting. The minutes of the March board meeting were approved as corrected. The February minutes are still missing; Heidi has part of the information and Bruce has the rest.
Vice president: no report.
Treasurer: Our year-end statement shows no surprises; amounts are as expected. We did significantly better than projected because we had fewer shows than planned; we plan conservatively by projecting high costs and low payments, so shows that are backed out of the budget will tend to make it look better. Quartermaster: The tent maintenance (leather grommets) is under way.
The Reps had nothing to report.
Guild news: Seeds were exchanged for the garden guild; we are going to inquire of Laurie Ford, who has the largest veggie garden, would like help with it. (Who is going to make this call?). Sword guild is still pending, but the practice swords on order should be finished by May 15.
Camp drill: In April Cindy will present on folklore this month; also we will go over waulking songs in preparation for waulking at the Scottish Festival. May drill is at Scottish Festival; for June David will make a presentation on boats and we will work on sarks.
The Contracts Rep is to check in with Liz about Scottish Festival (done), check in with Woodville about student questions and firing permits (done and delegated), sign a contract with Fort William (in progress), check with Perham again, check about the Faribault rendezvous (no money in it), and email Margaret with dates for Deer River and Aberdeen so she can assess member interest.
Old Business:
We need a new Secretary. The President read off the duties of the secretary: attend meetings, run the communications committee, write up minutes, mail out the hard copy newsletter, and so forth.
We have seven troopers, including a nice new one that was free. The Quartermaster thinks we would do well to get rid of number five, one of the smaller ones. He thinks he knows a places to put it. The President requested that the Board organize its thinking on this issue and be prepared to address it next meeting.
The quarterly members' meeting cannot be in May; there have not been two months' notice. Julie will ask the rec center about June.
It is possible that we can make a commercial to be shown at Convergence. John Debnam, for one, has a/v footage.
Johndezvous and the Trek are on hold but will likely occur later in the season.
Respectfully submitted,
Mia McDavid
Chief of Staff

We have a yahoo groups email list for the guild that we use for reminders about the meetings and topical discussions. If you want to be on the email list, request an invitation to join from Bruce at bruceyoder at juno dot com.
Please contact your music chair, me, to express your interest, and to let me know what evenings would work best for you. And if you can host.
I am thinking maybe twice a month, but you can vote on that, too.
I will set it up for the day(s) with the most votes.
And if you have a better name for it than Gaffneyis Glee Club, I am all ears. It does have a nice ring to it, though.

We have seven members already, and are working on a bit more refined style of music than we do in our regular music meetings.
Contact your music chair (David) if you are interested in joining up.

Netiquette is very important since most of our Clann communication is done via email. When we use the internet to facilitate our communication, we don't have tools like facial expression, gestures, or tone of voice to compliment our written words. Sometimes our messages are misinterpreted. I want to remind everyone that the message sent is received by another person, not a machine, and they might not completely understand the sender's true intent. Therefore, be vigilant, and clear in your communications. Be aware that the person on the receiving end is susceptible to inferences not intended. Don't let the impersonality of the email tool make your words into something less personal that could be misconstrued.
Let us ask ourselves, "Would I say this to the person's face?". If our answer is no, or is emotionally charged, we should walk away for awhile and think of another way to rewrite the message. This way, we can all be sure that what we just put into writing is something we can be comfortable saying in person.
I have been elected by the Clann Tartan membership to resolve any complaints that arise, but here is an area where we can all prevent future misunderstandings. If you have concerns or become aware of unsettled issues, please contact me via email at mommyco at baldwin-telecom dot net, or give me a call at 651-204-1778, or on my cell at 715-497-9792. Thanks:)
Laura

The following is a list of the dates of the events that are currently on the schedule for this year. The staff has met and decided to keep this running list of events in the newsletter to give you a chance to get an idea of what is going on this season as well as keep you updated to changes in the schedule.
The column titled status will include the following information.
Tentative- this means that an event organizer or Clann has expressed a strong enough interest in doing this event that it warrants reserving space on the calendar for the event.
Pending- this is the next stage of an event. This means that the Contracts Administrator has entered serious discussion about Clann doing an event but we are still not committed to the event. You should however if possible think about whether or not you may be able to attend this event.
Scheduled- this level means that the board and staff have approve the event and we are committed to providing manpower to making the event happen. When an event is assigned this level please let the HCF know as soon as possible if you can or can not attend this event.
Canceled- This means that for various reasons an scheduled event has been removed from the current season. We will try and give as much notice as we can prior to canceling an event.
If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact staff regarding this matter
Thanks,
Your Staff
